
DeWitt first appeared on stage at the age of 13. DeWitt earned her degree from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. The director suggested that she enroll in UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. In the program, she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship in addition to the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA she was employed as a secretary, completing her television debut on the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to reports that she was trained by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has declared that the two actors never had a conversation. Dewitt's portrayal of Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 season is the one that made her the most famous. She was chosen to play Janet in the pilot of the show, and then hired. She also appeared as Janet in an episode in 1979 from the spinoff series The Ropers. DeWitt was the last actor to be featured in the show's 1984 finale. Then, she appeared in an episode on Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that she ceased acting for many years. The actress returned to acting in the role in an episode of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. After that she appeared in the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired in 1997, and featured a character based upon her. The voice actor was a different actress. She was featured in an episode of Cybill and also made an appearance in Living Single's final episode. The 2000s work of her include TV shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
