Lynley was the daughter of an Irish father and an Irish father and a New England mother. Before becoming an actress, she started her modeling career as a child model. She won the Theatre World Award as "one of the most promising personalities for 1956-57" for her performance in The Potting Shed. Lynley's film career got underway in the year 1958, with the Disney film The Light in the Forest. Holiday for Lovers (1959), Blue Denim (1959) followed. The film was nominated for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer Female. One year later, she was nominated again for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer Female.
